Digitalization is altering people’s behavior and habits, affecting how they spend their spare time, arising a question: Can one go over the top with a hobby that involves online activities such as video games? At what point does it become an addiction?
Researches on the topic are not very common. Still, the World Health Organization has already identified the problem and added “gaming disorder” to its medical reference in the 2018 International Classification of Diseases.
Gaming disorder: characterized by impaired control over the desire to play, where playing video games is prioritized over other activities, and the addict is inclined to continue playing despite its negative consequences. Attention is now being drawn to the potential harms associated with excessive gaming through detailed research on the issue.
Internet Addiction (IAD): Refers to excessive Internet use that interferes with normal daily activities and leads to negative consequences. It includes various aspects such as playing video games, social media, online shopping, and pornography. The risk factors and psychological mechanisms that lead to this addiction are already being researched, while effective prevention programs are also beginning to be developed.
Online gambling addiction: online gambling offers convenience, anonymity, and easy access, which can increase the risk of developing addictive behavior.
As the digital environment continues to evolve, promoting responsible online behavior, raising awareness of the potential risks, and developing prevention programs are crucial.
